About This Position
Professor Maria Santos at ETH Zurich's Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science is seeking a PhD student to work at the intersection of machine learning and climate science. The position is fully funded through the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the ETH Zurich Foundation. Switzerland is a global leader in climate research, and ETH Zurich hosts some of the world's most advanced climate modeling infrastructure. The research will focus on developing machine learning emulators for Earth System Models, using deep learning to improve climate predictions, and applying AI methods to extract insights from large climate datasets. The successful candidate will have access to ETH Zurich's supercomputing facilities and will collaborate with climate scientists from NOAA, ECMWF, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science. The ideal candidate has a Master's degree in atmospheric science, physics, applied mathematics, or computer science, with demonstrated experience in machine learning and Python programming. The monthly salary is CHF 3,900 (with annual increases per SNF salary guidelines).
